More Than Your Mom's Apple Pie

If you have not noticed- I like to get straight to the point of why you're here! I look up recipes all the time and hate the long drawn out story in the beginning. I hope you're enjoying the recipes, and if you have any questions, leave me a comment!


  • 7 Granny Smith's green apples

  • 1 box of a two count pie dough

  • 1 lemon

  • 2 table spoons of softened butter

  • 1 cup of brown sugar

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 1/2 tablespoons of flour

  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon

  • 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg

  • 1/4 teaspoon of ginger

  • A pinch of salt

  • Baking spray



This recipe can feed up to 4-6 people if you are making a standard 9 inch pie pan.



  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

  2. Clean apples by soaking in a bowl filled with hot water and vinegar.

  3. While apples are soaking, spray pie pan with baking spray and fit one pie crust into the pan. Use your hands to mold the dough according to the pan, and pull off any excess dough around the edges. (If you don't this will bake, fall into the bottom of the oven and the oven will smoke.) Leave in the oven for about 10 minutes.

  4. While the first half of the dough is pre-baking, drain apples of water and rinse with cool water. Peel, cut and dice the apples into small squares.

  5. Cut lemons and squeeze juice over apples. Discard of any seeds.

  6. Drop in all of your dry ingredients and mix together with a spoon or spatula. At this point your crust should be out of the oven!

  7. Last throw in one tablespoon of butter and mix into your apple base.

  8. Pour apple base into warm pie crust, but do not pour any extra liquid from the sugars/butter in.

  9. Place second pie dough on top and use hands to form the dough over the pie. Take a fork and mark around the edges so that the excess dough can come off and so that it binds with the dough underneath.

  10. Take a butter knife and cut small slits in the top of the pie and a small hole in the middle so that the contents inside bake properly.

  11. Before places in oven, rub some of your melted butter on stop of the dough.

  12. Allow pie to bake for about 40 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.

  13. As soon as you take the pie out, rub a little more melted butter on top and sprinkle a little sugar on top of that.


Last Notes:

  • To those that hate doesn't matter- use it! The lemon helps prep the apples and bring the natural flavors out.

  • Traditional recipes ask that you bake the apple ahead of time, but honestly the apples are soft and yummy this way. Let me know if you decide to try it out differently.
